Ans Markus - Cape Town

Ans Markus (1947, Halfweg) is self taught. As a child she loved to draw and at a later age she followed drawing classes in anatomy. She researched various traditional oil painting techniques and chose a realistic figurative style to relate her narrative about, as she puts it; 'Women who wish to be free'. Ans Markus introduces a personal mythology into her work which embraces an individual world of thoughts, experiences and feelings. Since 1978, the unremitting rigour with which she has pursued her self-research in the public eye using painting as a medium has given voice to women's experiences, whilst revealing a truly pioneering spirit. This makes Ans Markus's art not only innovative, but also distinctly authentic.
